Thinking of buying some new lighting for your home in 2016? Excellent! It’s a great upgrade to any home whether you are thinking of selling soon or not. Changing your lighting can enhance the whole look of your room. In particular, in the kitchen it can modernize and bring a kitchen up to date with the latest trends giving it a much younger feel. Here’s a look at what’s hot right now:
The ‘sputnik’ design as it is best known is everywhere! It’s hugely popular with millennials and brings a cool, modern, architectural element to any room. You can find it in brass which is also a trend right now, as well as a shinier chrome finish, bronze etc. I recommend it for a dining room pop! Also above are the chrome and glass look sconces for bathrooms. This is a big trend for baths right now: chrome- or believe it or not: gold is back! But not the gold from 10 years ago – a more modern brushed finish. Take a look at any pottery barn or home goods and you’ll see what I mean!
Metallics are also on trend. Copper, brass, silver, with the industrial edge.
Speaking of industrial- you’ll see a mix of industrial styles in all major retailers! Think Mid Century Modern. Reclaimed wood and greys in every room mixed with these old timey funky fixtures.
Spherical chandeliers have been popular for a few years now so fore warning it’s a trend that may be on the way out soon. However, they look gorgeous and still incorporate some of that more architectural look. If traditional style is more your thing you might look into finding a sphere for your space!
There are some beautiful trends out there for window coverings that are well worth the expenditure and can change the whole look of your rooms. Here are some of my favorites:
Organic Coverings – Neutral and work in every room. Bring nature indoors and add texture to your design concept.
Hunter Douglas sheers collection lets light into the room while cutting down on too much sun and heat. It gives a gauzy, dreamy, effect buyers love! And the best part is no clunky blinds getting caught up in each other and pulls twisting every which way. Easy open and close!
Drapes will always have their place in a home. The most popular of late are the linen drapes- seen at Pottery Barn, Crate and Barrel, Bed, Bath and Beyond- all major retailers. There are both expensive and inexpensive options and they can add both color and texture to your room design.
As a real estate broker, I am often asked what updates can bring the most return on your investment? While kitchens and baths will always be the mainstays of home renovation, if your budget doesn’t allow for an entire room makeover these are a few simple updates that can freshen up a home and take a few years off!
1.) Change out the old light fixtures
Large brass chandeliers are particularly outdated. You can sub in a whole new look for just a few hundred dollars.
2.) Switch your switches
Changing out your outlets and switches to fresh white makes a bigger impact than you would think. To potential buyers it looks like a younger home.
3.) Door Knobs and Hinges
You may not have the budget to make your entire home look like new construction but for anywhere from a few hundred dollars to around a thousand, depending on how many doors you have, you can have new looking doors. Hinges in particular are pretty easy to do yourself with a little patience and a drill.
Chrome, Nickel, Brushed Nickel- whatever your taste, or you can go through a few new construction open houses in your area and see what’s currently popular.
